Meet DeNiro, a dog for adoption in St. Louis! DeNiro is a smart, funny, Bassett Hound mix. When he was first rescued he thought his name was ‘bad dog’ as he had a lot to learn, but these days it is without a doubt ‘good dog!’ DeNiro is now neutered, housetrained, up to date on vaccinations and has a whole slew of commands listed on his résumé!
DeNiro had a rough life before he was rescued last fall. He was found with a rope deeply embedded in his neck, a nasty infection, very skinny, and to top things off he tested heartworm positive. He used to jump on anyone, he often tried to escape, and he never wanted to go in his kennel, but now he is a completely different dog. At around 2.5 or 3 years old he might still try to chew on a few things, but otherwise he listens well, loves to snuggle, loves to have his giant head scratched (and he likes a good butt scratch now and then too) and to go on car rides and long walks.
DeNiro needs a strong ‘pack leader’ to continue to show him the ropes in his forever home. He prefers women and although he can handle children, they are not his preferred companions. DeNiro would do best in a quieter home that allows him to adjust slowly to new situations and people as he learns how to trust those around him. DeNiro is not shy, but needs time to get acclimated to his environment. He gets along fine with other dogs, but does not need them. DeNiro might also do better without cats in his home. One of his favorite activities is snuggling on the couch for a good movie and every now and then falling asleep on it too. DeNiro might snore a little, but don’t worry he won’t wake up the entire neighborhood!
