With the impending snow storm and frigid temperatures about to hit the St. Louis area, we’re doing all we can to pull as many dogs as possible before the cold hits. In addition to rescuing, we’re also attempting to provide shelter for the dogs in East St. Louis that we can’t bring back with us.
So far this morning we’ve been able to bring back five dogs – three puppies and two adults. All of these dogs will need veterinary care. We’re asking the community to help us by donating to Charlotte’s Second Chance Fund – our emergency vet bills fund that allows us to rescue dogs who are in serious medical need or during emergency situations.

The pup above was rescued as part of a joint effort between Gateway and Helping Hands with Monroe County Humane Society.
The boy above is Slash. Here’s an account of his rescue:
“We had just set the trap for pokey and went to check on church. We were headed back to the trap when PJ missed her turn and had to continue straight. She saw 3 big black dogs sun bathing and went to turn around in the drive way of the abandoned house. As we turned into the drive way we saw this poor guy on the porch. It was like all you could see was his open wound. PJ got out of the car and the look on her face told us that we needed to get this guy. She grabbed her slip lead and as she approached him on the porch his tail began to wag and she pet him and slowly slipped the leash around his neck. He hopped right in the car and ride with is like an angel, staring out the window most of the time. When we got to Hillside we noticed he not only has this gash, but one of his neck, wounds on his head, a pretty gnarly ear infection, and a rib bone lodged in the roof of his mouth. Super Vet, Dr. Ed, came in and cleaned him all up! He sadly was heart worm positive as well”
