Denise and Tate at Pet-a-Palooza
Gateway Pet Guardians cannot rescue without fosters. They are our lifeline, and devote their hearts to their foster pets. But even fosters need a break, whether it’s a vacation, family visit, or business trip. Temporary fosters are what make this possible!
Temp fosters bring adoptable animals into their homes for shorter periods of time. It can be for a weekend, a week, or even longer. It’s a smaller commitment, but temp fosters make the world of difference in the life of a rescue dog, because their foster parents are able to go on their trip while they stay behind in a warm, cozy home.
Denise McNally temp fosters for GPG, and she loves every minute of it. “I can make a difference when it comes to saving dogs and cats. I love that I can help out GPG in a small way, even though I can’t foster full-time. Ideally, I would love to be a full-time foster, but for now it makes me feel good when I can help out temporarily.”
Denise lives in a condo, and fostering full-time isn’t an option because of concern for her neighbors. But bringing in fosters on a temporary basis allows her the flexibility to be home while the foster is in her home to make sure neighbors aren’t bothered. It’s a win for everybody!
Tate and Denise’s dog, Lincoln
What is it like to be a temp foster? Recently, Denise spent the weekend with Tate while his foster was out of town. She jumped up immediately when the plea went out because it was perfect timing – Friday through Sunday night. She could spend all weekend with Tate and her dog, Lincoln! The three went on short walks, took naps on the couch together, and Denise even took him to an adoption event that weekend to help him find his forever family. Denise got to see firsthand what an amazing dog Tate is. His easy-going and loving personality made him the perfect houseguest!
Denise’s favorite part about temp fostering is meeting so many new and different dogs. Each dog is different, but each is great in their own way! Her advice to others about temp fostering: “Do it! It’s a great way to dip your toes into fostering full-time if you are considering it and are unsure. It also is a great way for someone like me who can’t have a full-time foster to be able to help out all of great GPG full-time fosters!”
